tuck everlasting:
The musical
Who I played
what i learned
How i grew
In Tuck Everlasting, I played Betsy Foster, a protective, loving widow and mother to Winnie Foster. When Winnie runs away, she spends the musical fighting to search for her daughter and recover their relationship. In a ballet sequence at the end, she grows old and dies after getting to watch her daughter grow up.
Something that I focused on a lot in this musical was listening and responding to my scene partners. Betsy is taking in a lot of information at once, so I learned a lot about the importance of clear, natural reactions, which informed my objectives, tactics, and the way that I delivered lines.
As previously mentioned, I improved immensely when it came to responding to my scene partners. This role also made me more comfortable playing someone outside of my age range, which I don't often do. Playing a middle-aged woman involved a lot of research into her mannerisms and how they might be different from a sixteen-year-old's. Getting into the mindset of a mother was very valuable, and it has informed some of the plays that I have written since performing in this show.
