Scarlet and Evie really, really hate each other. They're complete opposites, and when Evie beat Scarlet in the election for senior class president, their rivalry was cemented. When their teacher, Mr. King, forces them to work together on a project, they begrudgingly agree to interview Ava, a woman with a mysteriously untraceable past. As they interview Ava, they learn about how she fell in love with Emeline, a story that eventually culminated in a traumatic loss. Told partly through flashbacks and poetry by Young Ava, Ava learns to find closure as Scarlet and Evie begin to fall for each other and realize what they have been running from.
